کہانی کا آغاز یکم اگست 1947 کو امرتسر کے کٹرا جے مل سنگھ سے ہوتا ہے، جہاں لارڈ ماؤنٹ بیٹن کے 3 جون کے تقسیم کے اعلان کے بعد صدیوں کا بھائی چارہ نفرت کی آگ میں بدل چکا ہے۔ ارجن (سکھ نوجوان) اور نور (مسلمان لڑکی) بچپن کے ساتھی ہیں، مگر اب مذہب ان کے درمیان دیوار بن چکا ہے۔ 14 اگست کو آزادی کے اعلان کے ساتھ ہی امرتسر میں مسلمانوں کا قتلِ عام شروع ہو جاتا ہے۔ نور کا خاندان ٹرک میں بیٹھ کر پاکستان روانہ ہوتا ہے۔ الوداعی لمحے میں پچھلی عید پر کھینچی گئی ان کی واحد مشترکہ تصویر کھینچا تانی کے دوران دو حصوں میں بٹ جاتی ہے—بالکل ان دونوں کی تقدیر کی طرح۔
