Unwilling to compromise her self-respect, she asks the pharmacist to reduce the dosage to match her budget. Overhearing this, Shafe quietly steps in and hands his credit card to cover her total bill. When Maya firmly refuses charity from a stranger, Shafe calmly explains that it is not a favor, but a necessity for a patient’s wellbeing, before leaving without revealing his identity.
Later, Maya briefly enters Begum Zainab’s room to hand her a glass of water. Begum Zainab is immediately struck by Maya’s politeness and subtle sorrow. When she playfully suggests to Shafe that Maya would make a lovely bride, Shafe dryly dismisses the idea of marriage, viewing it as an unnecessary burden.
The story takes a dramatic turn the following morning at the prestigious 35-story headquarters of Shafe Group International in Clifton. Maya arrives for a job interview for an administrative assistant position.

“ماں سے بڑھ کر پالا ہے تمہیں۔ نہ جانوں گی تو کون جانے گا؟”
کمرے میں چند لمحوں کی خاموشی چھا گئی۔
بیگم زینب نے اچانک پوچھا،
“وہ لڑکی…”
شفے نے چونک کر نظریں اٹھائیں۔
“کون سی لڑکی؟”
“وہی… آج دفتر میں جس کے ساتھ برا سلوک ہوا۔”
شفے کا چہرہ سنجیدہ ہوگیا۔
“آپ کو کس نے بتایا؟”
“ابو تراب نے۔”
وہ چند لمحے خاموش رہیں، پھر دھیرے سے بولیں،
“بیٹا… جس لڑکی کی آنکھوں میں اتنا خوف ہو، یقین مانو… اس نے زندگی میں بہت کچھ برداشت کیا ہوتا ہے۔”
شفے نے کوئی جواب نہیں دیا۔
صرف خاموشی سے قالین پر نظریں جمائے بیٹھا رہا۔
بیگم زینب نے تسبیح ایک طرف رکھی۔
“کل…”
انہوں نے معنی خیز لہجے میں کہا۔
“اس لڑکی کے بارے میں معلوم کرو۔”
شفے نے فوراً سر اٹھایا۔
“دادی جان…”
“میں فضول تجسس کی بات نہیں کر رہی۔”
انہوں نے نرمی سے اس کا ہاتھ تھاما۔
“میں صرف یہ جاننا چاہتی ہوں کہ وہ خیریت سے ہے یا نہیں۔”
شفے نے ایک لمحہ سوچا۔
پھر آہستہ سے بولا،
“جی…”
“میں معلوم کروا لوں گا۔”
بیگم زینب کے لبوں پر ہلکی سی مسکراہٹ آگئی۔
انہیں محسوس ہو رہا تھا…
کہ تقدیر نے خاموشی سے دو اجنبی راستوں کو ایک دوسرے کے قریب لانا شروع کر دیا تھا۔
