Influenced by her recent reading of Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi’s famous short story “Dastak” and a profound quote by Islamic scholar Dr. Israr Ahmed about empathy, Noor’s conscience convicts her. She refuses to let her ego control her. She steps into the freezing cold to massage her grandmother’s aching shoulders and turn on the heater, discovering that serving an ailing elder is not a mountain to climb but a simple test of one’s humanity.
The novelette reaches a heart-wrenching climax when Dadu suffers a second, catastrophic spasm of pain, screaming out in agony before losing consciousness in the arms of her granddaughter, Lize.
The emotional weight intensifies as Hayat Ali, Noor’s father, enters the room. Described as the strongest pillar of the family whose single gesture governed the household, he completely breaks down. Seeing a strong, authoritative father weeping like a child at his mother’s feet is one of the most poignant and realistic scenes in modern Urdu fiction.
Zeb Bint-e-Arshad also bravely sheds light on systemic flaws. When Hayat Ali desperately calls the emergency ambulance service, a cold, indifferent operator casually replies, “No vehicle is available right now, just give her some medicine at home, she’ll be fine.” This moment of sheer helplessness brilliantly critiques a society where human life is reduced to mere bureaucratic protocols.
As the night transitions towards Tahajjud (the pre-dawn hours), Dadu peacefully breathes her last. The “story of an end” is completed.
For Noor-e-Hayat, this death is not just a family tragedy; it is a profound spiritual awakening. Standing in the corner of the room, she experiences a deep existential crisis. The author masterfully weaves Islamic eschatology into the plot. Noor remembers old poetic verses about the darkness of the grave and is shaken to her core by Surah Al-An’am (Verse 94):

“لیزے! لیزے! لیزے۔۔۔” بے تحاشا کراہتے ہوئے، انہوں نے سیاہی کے اس جھٹپٹے میں اپنی چہیتی پوتی لیزے کو پکارا۔ ان کی لرزتی آواز میں ایک التجا تھی، ایک پکار تھی۔ وہ جانتی تھیں کہ لیزے کی آنکھ جلدی کھل جاتی ہے، مگر وہ رات بچوں کی گہری نیند کی رات تھی۔
“نورے! عائشے!” انہوں نے باری باری سب کو پکارا، مگر ان کی آواز اندھیرے کے غار میں گم ہو کر رہ گئی اور جواب بے سود رہا۔ “حیات بیٹے! مجھے درد ہو رہا ہے۔۔۔ آہ۔۔۔ اففف!” جب پوتیوں کی بیداری غیر متوقع ٹھہری، تو انہوں نے اپنے بیٹے اور بہو کو پکارا، جن کا کمرہ صحن کے دوسری طرف تھا۔ مگر اس رات نورے کے علاوہ سب دیر سے سوئے تھے۔
حیات علی کسی کاروباری سلسلے میں لاہور گئے تھے اور جو لوگ لاہور جیسے بڑے شہروں کی مسافتوں پر نکلتے ہیں، ان کے پیچھے گھر والوں کو بستر پر لیٹ کر بھی جاگنا پڑتا ہے۔ وہاں لاہور کی چمکتی سڑکوں پر بھی سب جاگے ہوئے تھے، اور یہاں اس چھوٹے سے قصبے کے گھر میں بھی سب جاگنے کے بعد ابھی سوئے ہی تھے، سوائے نورے حیات کے۔نورے حیات، جو اب بیدار ہو چکی تھی۔
جب اس نے اپنی آنکھیں کھولیں اور دادو کی درد سے ڈوبی ہوئی کراہٹ اس کے کانوں کے پردوں سے ٹکرائی، تو ایک لمحے کے لیے اس کے معصوم چہرے پر ناگواری کے سائے لہرائے۔ یہ نیند کے اچانک ٹوٹنے کی وہ فطری ناگواری تھی جو ہر انسان کے اندر جاگتی ہے۔
اسی ناگواری کے ساتھ اس نے اندھیرے میں ارد گرد دیکھا، اس کی نظریں لیزے کو ڈھونڈ رہی تھیں، جو اکثر ایسے وقتوں میں دادو کے پاس موجود ہوتی تھی۔ مگر لیزے گہری نیند میں تھی۔ اسی لمحے نورے کے دل میں ایک نامعلوم خوف نے سر اٹھایا۔ اس مکمل، بھیانک اندھیرے میں وہ مسلسل، درد بھری کراہٹ اسے اچانک بہت خوفناک اور اجنبی لگی۔ جیسے وہ کراہٹ اس دنیا کی نہ ہو۔
