ابھی اس نے چند ہی قدم اٹھائے تھے کہ دائیں جانب جھاڑیوں کے ہلنے کی آواز سنائی دی۔ دل دھڑکنے لگا، مگر اُس نے ہمت کر کے جھاڑیوں کی طرف دیکھا، جہاں سفید پوشاک میں لپٹی ہوئی ایک عورت کھڑی تھی۔ وہ مزید ہمت کرتے ہوئے اس کی جانب بڑھی، جیسے ہی چند قدم اور آگے بڑھی، اچانک چاند بادلوں کی اوٹ سے باہر آیا اور عورت کا چہرہ نمایاں ہوا۔ یہ منظر اتنا خوفناک تھا کہ انستاسیہ کی چیخ بے ساختہ نکل گئی۔ سامنے کھڑی مخلوق نہ تو کوئی انسان تھی، نہ ہی حیوان، بلکہ ایک بھیانک راکشس تھی جس کے منہ سے ہر طرف خون بہہ رہا تھا۔
وہ خوفناک مخلوق انستاسیہ پر جھپٹی، مگر اس نے جلدی سے خنجر سے وار کیا۔ مخلوق بلبلاتے ہوئے ایک قدم لڑکھڑاٸی، اس کی چیخوں کی گونج پورے جنگل میں پھیل گئی۔
دور کہیں اپنے کمرے میں ٹیبل پر جھکا جادوگر تلام اس خوفناک چیخ پر چونک کر سیدھا ہوگیا۔ اس کے ذہن میں کچھ نہ کچھ ہلچل ہو رہی تھی۔
ادھر انستاسیہ نے مزید وقت ضائع کیے بغیر جنگل کی طرف دوڑ لگائی۔ وہ مخلوق بھی اس کے پیچھے دوڑی، انستاسیہ کے لبوں پر چیخیں اور آنکھوں میں خوف طاری تھا۔ روتے ہوئے وہ چیخ رہی تھی، جیسے اس کے اندر کے خوف کو نکالنے کا یہی واحد راستہ ہو۔ بھاگنے کی شدت سے اس کی گول گھیرے والی فراک جھاڑیوں میں الجھ کر جگہ جگہ سے پھٹ گئی، مگر وہ اس کی پرواہ کیے بغیر بھاگتی رہی۔ جب اس کا پاؤں ایک کاٹ دار جھاڑی سے ٹکرایا تو درد کی ایک شدید لہر اس کے جسم میں دوڑ گئی۔ وہ سسکتی ہوئی ایک بڑے درخت کے تنے کے پیچھے چھپ گئی۔
اس نے اپنے منہ پر ہاتھ رکھ کر اپنی سسکیوں کا گلا گھونٹنے کی کوشش کی، مگر قدموں کی آہٹ اس کے قریب آتی جارہی تھی۔ دل کی دھڑکنیں تیز ہو گئیں۔ اچانک وہ مخلوق اس کے سامنے آ گئی۔ انستاسیہ کی چیخ نکل گئی اور اس کے لبوں سے بے اختیار ایک نام نکلا:
“جادوگر تلام!”
دوسری طرف بیٹھا تلام جھٹکے سے اٹھا۔
اس نے خوف بھرے انداز میں دیکھا کہ مخلوق اس پر وار کرنے کے لیے جھپٹ رہی ہے، اور وہ بے بسی سے اپنی آنکھیں بند کر گئی۔ لیکن کچھ لمحوں بعد ایک ٹھنڈی ہوا کے جھونکے نے اس کی پلکوں کو پھڑپھڑایا اور اس نے ڈرتے ہوئے آنکھیں کھولیں۔
آنکھوں میں حیرانی لیے، اس نے دیکھا کہ ہوا میں اڑتا ہوا ایک شخص اس کی کمر کو تھامے، اسے اپنے قریب کیے ہوئے تھا“۔
