“Banjh” is a powerful and thought-provoking social-romantic novelette by Iqra Sabir that delves deep into a taboo societal issue: infertility and the traditional tendency to always blame the woman. The story revolves around Warisha, an educated and ambitious young woman whose dreams of a modern, independent life are abruptly sidelined when she is married off to Ammar, a man chosen by her parents to keep her close.
Entering a sprawling joint family system, Warisha quickly transitions from a cherished daughter to a multitasking caregiver burdened by household chores and the constant pampering of her nephews and nieces. However, her peace is shattered when the lack of children after a couple of years becomes a weapon for her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law to relentlessly taunt, humiliate, and marginalize her, eventually culminating in a cruel threat of Ammar’s second marriage.
Refusing to silently endure the psychological torture anymore, Warisha exposes a sealed medical file that turns the tables entirely: the infertility is not hers, but Ammar’s. یہ ناول اس درد کو لفظ دیتا ہے جو ہر عورت سہتی ہے، مگر بیان نہیں کر پاتی۔ ایک ایسا سماجی مسئلہ جس پر بات کرنا “معیوب” سمجھا جاتا ہے، الزام ہمیشہ عورت پر ڈال دیا جاتا ہے، اور سچ کو عزت کے نام پر دفن کر دیا جاتا ہے۔
وریشا کی زبانی یہ کہانی ہمیں جھنجھوڑتی ہے کہ اولاد دینا اور نہ دینا اللہ کے ہاتھ میں ہے، لیکن طعنے دینا، کردار پر سوال اٹھانا اور دوسری شادی کا خوف دلانا… یہ انسان کا ظلم ہے۔
